VAM — Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhiza (வேம்) | Nature’s Root Symbiont for Superior Crop Growth
VAM (Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhiza) is one of the most powerful and scientifically proven bio fertilizers in natural farming. It is a beneficial soil fungus that forms a deep symbiotic relationship with plant roots — dramatically extending the root system, enhancing nutrient and water absorption, and building long-term soil health. Nalvazhi VAM contains high-quality mycorrhizal spores that colonise plant roots and act as a natural extension of the root system, unlocking nutrients that would otherwise remain unavailable to the plant.
What is VAM (Mycorrhiza)?
Mycorrhiza literally means “fungus root”. When VAM spores come into contact with plant roots, they germinate and form a network of fine fungal threads called hyphae that extend far beyond the root zone into the surrounding soil. These hyphae act like a secondary root system — absorbing phosphorus, zinc, copper, water, and other nutrients from areas the plant’s own roots cannot reach, and delivering them directly to the plant.
This symbiotic relationship benefits both the fungus (which receives sugars from the plant) and the plant (which receives enhanced nutrition and stress tolerance) — a true partnership forged over millions of years of evolution.
Key Benefits of Nalvazhi VAM
- Dramatically improves phosphorus uptake — VAM hyphae can absorb phosphorus from soil zones inaccessible to roots, reducing the need for chemical phosphate fertilizers by up to 50%
- Extends effective root system — fungal hyphae extend 10–15 cm beyond the root zone, massively increasing the soil volume explored for nutrients
- Enhances water absorption — improves drought tolerance and reduces water stress significantly
- Boosts zinc and copper uptake — corrects micronutrient deficiencies naturally
- Strengthens plant immunity — mycorrhizal plants show greater resistance to soil-borne pathogens and root diseases
- Improves soil structure — fungal hyphae produce glomalin, a sticky protein that binds soil particles and improves soil aggregation
- Promotes faster establishment — transplants and seedlings establish more quickly with less transplant shock
- Increases crop yield and quality — better nutrition leads to stronger plants, better flowering, and higher yields
- Reduces fertilizer costs — reduces dependency on chemical phosphate and micronutrient fertilizers
- Long-lasting effect — once established in the soil, mycorrhizal networks persist and continue to benefit crops season after season
Suitable Crops
All crops including vegetables, fruits, paddy, millets, pulses, oilseeds, sugarcane, cotton, flowers, plantation crops, home gardens, terrace gardens, and nursery seedlings. Especially beneficial for phosphorus-demanding crops like paddy, maize, tomato, chilli, and fruit trees.
How to Use
- Seed Treatment: Mix 5–10 g of VAM per kg of seeds. Moisten seeds slightly, coat with VAM powder, and sow immediately.
- Seedling Root Dip: Make a slurry of 50 g VAM in 1 litre of water. Dip seedling roots for 15–30 minutes before transplanting.
- Soil Application: Mix 1–2 kg per acre with compost or FYM and apply in furrows or at the root zone before planting.
- Nursery Application: Mix 5–10 g per kg of nursery soil or potting mix before filling trays or pots.
- Important: Avoid mixing VAM with chemical fungicides, as they will kill the beneficial fungal spores. Use bio-compatible inputs only.
