Azospirillum (அசோஸ்பைரில்லம்) — Nitrogen-Fixing Bio Fertilizer for Vigorous Root Growth & Higher Yields
Azospirillum is one of the most widely researched and proven nitrogen-fixing bio fertilizers in the world. It is a free-living, associative nitrogen-fixing bacterium that colonises the root zone (rhizosphere) of plants and fixes atmospheric nitrogen — converting the abundant but unavailable nitrogen gas (N₂) in the air into plant-available ammonia (NH₃). Nalvazhi Azospirillum contains high populations of viable Azospirillum lipoferum and Azospirillum brasilense strains, formulated for maximum root colonisation and nitrogen fixation efficiency.
How Does Azospirillum Work?
Unlike Rhizobium (which fixes nitrogen inside root nodules of legumes), Azospirillum is an associative nitrogen fixer that lives freely in the soil and on root surfaces of all types of crops. It colonises the root zone and fixes atmospheric nitrogen through its nitrogenase enzyme system, making nitrogen available to the plant. Additionally, Azospirillum produces plant growth hormones — particularly auxins (IAA), gibberellins, and cytokinins — that dramatically stimulate root hair development, lateral root formation, and overall root architecture, enabling the plant to explore a larger soil volume for water and nutrients.
Key Benefits of Nalvazhi Azospirillum
- Biological nitrogen fixation — fixes 20–40 kg of atmospheric nitrogen per acre per season, reducing chemical nitrogen fertilizer requirements by 25–30%
- Promotes root growth — produces auxins (IAA) that stimulate root hair proliferation, lateral root formation, and deeper root penetration
- Enhances nutrient uptake — larger, more extensive root system absorbs more water, nitrogen, phosphorus, and micronutrients from the soil
- Improves germination & seedling vigour — seed treatment with Azospirillum significantly improves germination rate and early seedling establishment
- Boosts plant growth hormones — gibberellins and cytokinins produced by Azospirillum stimulate shoot growth, tillering, and branching
- Increases crop yield — consistent field trials show 10–20% yield increase across cereals, millets, vegetables, and other crops
- Improves drought tolerance — deeper, more extensive root systems improve water uptake and drought resilience
- Reduces chemical fertilizer costs — partial replacement of urea and other nitrogen fertilizers reduces input costs significantly
- Improves soil health — Azospirillum activity enhances soil microbial diversity and overall soil biological health
- Safe & eco-friendly — 100% biological, no chemical residues, safe for soil, water, and beneficial organisms
Suitable Crops
All non-legume crops including paddy, millets (ragi, bajra, jowar, foxtail millet), maize, wheat, sugarcane, cotton, vegetables (tomato, chilli, brinjal, onion, okra), fruits (banana, mango, citrus), oilseeds (groundnut, sesame, sunflower), flowers, and plantation crops. Especially effective for cereals and millets.
How to Use
- Seed Treatment: Mix 20–25 ml per kg of seeds. Moisten seeds slightly with water or rice gruel, coat with Azospirillum liquid, shade dry for 30 minutes, and sow immediately. Do not expose treated seeds to direct sunlight.
- Seedling Root Dip: Dilute 250–500 ml in 10 litres of water and dip seedling roots for 15–30 minutes before transplanting.
- Soil Application: Mix 1–2 litres per acre with compost or FYM and broadcast evenly in the root zone before planting or during land preparation.
- Drip Irrigation: Dilute 500 ml – 1 litre per acre in water and apply through drip system at 20–30 day intervals.
- Important: Do not mix with chemical fertilizers, fungicides, or bactericides. Maintain a gap of at least 3–5 days between chemical applications and Azospirillum application.
